About The Area
Groton is situated on the mouth of the Thames River, just across from the city of New London. It is home to the U.S. Naval Base, the Navy’s primary submarine base. At the Submarine Force Museum, visitors can see the world’s finest collection of submarine artifacts as well as the USS Nautilus, the world’s first operational nuclear-powered sub.
Also located in Groton is Avery Point, the picturesque satellite campus of the University of Connecticut, which is where the historic Branford House Mansion resides. With its two-story fireplace, winding staircase and imported Italian marble, the 31-room mansion rivals those found in Newport. It was built in 1903 by Morton Freeman Plant, a wealthy businessman.
